syntactic ambiguity
We have discussed linguistic sexism that works to disadvantage women. Write an essay that argues for linguistic sexism in any language you know that discriminates against men.

the above is one of the questions in a past year feminism paper. imagine if i decided to "misinterpret" it and write my essay in another language. *so bored 'til it's funny*

hah! i actually did thought that you were supposed to write it in another language! but that's probably because of your highlighting the words in red.

yah i guess by highlighting the words i predisposed you to interpreting it that way. but i was afraid that if i didn't, people might not understand what the big deal was about. hiak hiak.

haha! i would have tried to write it in chinese =P

i did try! 中文所用的 "he" 和 "she" 把人类分成两组--男的和女的... and although my chinese sucks, it wouldn't matter 'cos my lecturer is indian! haha!!

how does 文所用的 "he" 和 "she" 把人类分成两组--男的和女 contribute to linguistic sexism that disadvantages women?

aiyah that is the meat of the essay which i haven't go into detail mah. the above sentence is only the start of the intro. but since my lecturer won't be able to read it, what's the point of continuing right? HAHA *evades question*

eh by the way i just re-realised that the essay is supposed to answer discrimination against men, not women. haha.

i can't think of any examples about linguistic sexism in english or chinese. :(

so, i'll write the above sentence in chinese for the essay. :)

by the way if you're interested, you could scan through this.

http://www.indiana.edu/~lggender/language-&-sexism.html

i just googled it. gives you the main points in very brief scan-through-able format. and is very interesting (imo, haha).
