this has probably been said to death already, but happiness is...
...the sight of lightning, sound of thunder, smell, taste and feel of rain while warm and cosy indoors. --> one_happiness

does anyone know why it is that lightning/thunder always seems to set car alarms off?

When the thunder is close enough, I think the concussion moves so much air that the car "thinks" it is being moved or hit, so the alarm goes off.

wow okay. concussion... whatever that is. i always thought it was the lightning flash or something.

wow i didn't know that! do you mean the ground vibrating slightly or the air surrounding the car sensor? sounds interesting.. (okay i think i sound silly here)

i always thought it's due to the lightning striking the car, thus setting off the alarm.

It is actually the air moving, just like waves in water or the same principle in using a sub woofer to produce bass in music. Only the energy released from the bolt of lightening creates the wave in air, and if the alarm is sensitive enough, it can pick that up. That is my best guess anyway. I am no lightening expert :)

okay that sounds like some serious physics (which i failed). haha. so i suppose those alarms that always go off must be really good ones!

wah if lightning strikes the car, won't there be burn marks or something? haha!
dreamerjarcheenta on April 18th, 2006 02:52 pm (UTC)
hahaha yes i can imagine streaks of burnt patches on the car. then sooner or later, people will start putting bi lei zhen (what's that called in english?) on their cars...
